How to Summarize a YouTube Video with ChatGPT

Have you ever wanted to know "the gist" of a YouTube video without actually watching it? This is the PERFECT spot to use ChatGPT. ChatGPT can take a YouTube video and return an excellent summary of the key points, without you having to watch it.

Here's a quick rundown of how to summarize a YouTube video using ChatGPT's AI...

What You'll Need

To summarize a YouTube video using ChatGPT, you'll need 2 things:

  1. The YouTube video's caption transcript
  2. A prompt that will guide ChatGPT through the summarization process

Quick note - we put together a free tool that will do this all in just one click. Check out our AI YouTube Summarizer.

Step 1: Get the YouTube Transcript

Let's say we want to summarize this video on Ancient Japan.

The first thing we need is the YouTube transcript of the captions from the video. Typically you can do this by clicking the "..." in the menu bar and then choosing "Show Transcript." You can then copy the video's entire transcript.

Unfortunately this process doesn't always work, for some reason YouTube doesn't always give you the "Show Transcript" option. That's a big reason we made our automated YouTube Summarizer.

But let's move forward assuming you were able to copy the video's transcript.

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT to Summarize the Transcript

Next up, you'll want to write a prompt that asks ChatGPT to summarize the transcript. I'd recommend something like this:

Summarize the following video transcript. Include all the key points and format your summary with headings and bullet points to make it quickly skimmable.

After your prompt, paste the YouTube video's transcript. Run your command in ChatGPT and check out the results!

That's where our AI YouTube Summarizer comes in. Drop the YouTube URL in our tool, click "Get Summary" and you're done! Here's what it looks like for the video we used as our example:
